The Contest KROQ's Weenie Roast Review and Pictures 06/27/01

Photo by Jen Lowery courtesy of [Rolling Stone] Click the photo to see Rolling Stone's pics of the Roast. This review is from Luis Mendoza. It was a hot scorching Saturday afternoon in Irvine at Verizon Ampitheatre. Me and my friend Alex awaited patiently for blink to come out and perform. We had just gotten back from the Bud Light Punk Rock Side Stage with Sum 41, The Living End, New Found Glory and Pennywise and man were they awesome!. We walked around during some of the *cough* sucky *cough* bands from the main stage and kicked it at the Famous Stars And Straps booth. They were selling merchandise, giving out stickers and had free magazines of "Tailgate" with Travis on the inside with some hot models. We then headed over to the Playstation 2 station and spent lots of quality time there. It wasn't until Staind that we proceeded to our seats. Finally the time had come, blink came on stage with fire bursting out of everywhere. I went berserk and started screaming as loud as I could. They started out with "The Rock Show" and "Don't Leave Me." In between they had some hilarious kick ass jokes and even played some volleyball. That's when Tom grabbed two beach balls and placed them near his "beach balls" and asked everyone if they like his "balls." They continued plainy mostly songs from Enema of The State and then more jokes followed by some songs of the new album "First Date", "Anthem Part II", and "Stay Together For The Kids", including one song that made everyone crack up,"Grandpa is an Asshole." They literally lit Travis on fire during the whole show. When they played their last song "Dammit" the whole freaking Ampitheatre went crazy and so did I. They had lights going on here and there and fireworks and bursting flames. It was awesome and it was the best blink show so far that I have attended. "Give it up for Hand Jobs and Finger Banging!" The Review No Jacket Required! 06/25/01
An excerpt from the MTV Interview with Mark. www.mtv.com "I don't know if this is a more mature album. I think it's a more advanced album. We definitely have some songs on here that do not have any maturity in them at all. Then we have some that are about ... all the same subjects we've always talked about. It's about relationships with family and girls and friends and life and divorce, being young and going to a party and trashing your friend's house. I think that we've just gotten better as songwriters and lyricists, so I don't think it's more mature."
